Hiram Hogshead

1824 - 1891

Hiram Hogshead was the third of ten children born to David Hogshead and Mary Logan. They moved to Daviess County in 1822. Hiram was born and raised on the family farm. He lacked formal education but became a highly successful man of business. He worked as a cooper for several years. In his youth, he traveled to California with a party of gold seekers and then progressed further up the coast to Oregon.

After returning to Indiana he manufactured tile, served on the Washington City Council from 1888-1890, and was particularly active in securing the location of the O & M shops here. He was a Mason and Knight Templar. Martha Ann Johnson (1826-1861) was his first wife, and they had two children, Seth and Glendora. After her death, he married Susan A. Juvenall on October 2, 1862. They raised three children, Emma, Mary, and Ephraim.
